Instapundit's Fingers to Lance Armstrong's Tweet

On August 30th, Instapundit asks: IS IT PARENTAL NEGLECT to let your kid bike to school?

Within 24 hours the story is around the globe and Lance Armstrong, the famous Tour de France winner, tweeted his opinion about the story: "That's ridiculous. I'm glad I was so "neglected".

And mainstream media is gonna compete with the reactive ability and rapid, targeted, viral dissemination of these alternative information channels how?

Well, of course the MSM isn't. Nor are governments, etc.

It is worth remembering that back in the day, perhaps before you were born, the USSR was doing everything it could to stop samizdat.

Something we should keep in mind before overestimating the chances for Iran or Islamofascists.

I suppose that's a good reason to be optimistic - the government (our government) can't control information like it used to.

I wasn't too worried about the Islamofascists beating us - rather it often seems like we're badly damaging ourselves from within. A few more presidents like this one, and we might be ready to hang it up.

When I was 11, a friend and I rode our bikes to Bolsa Chica State Beach and back.

From Pasadena.

Skipper I don't know how far that is, but at about 13 c. 1947 a friend and I rode our Schwinn's from Rego Park Queens to Coney Island (about 20 mi.) and back through the worst neighborhoods NY had to offer at the time without the sightest problem except that of hunger and thirst (we only had a dime between us).

It was a great unplanned adventure -- we saw a street sign that said Coney Island with an arrow and off we went.

We got home on time for dinner as usual and as nobody asked where we were, we saw no reason to tell.

Them really were the days.

You're both more adventurous than I ever was as a kid. On the other hand, growing up in upstate New York, there really wasn't anyplace interesting to ride to. Just dozens of miles in every direction of low, densely forested hills and sparse population. On the third hand, it was also very, very safe. It still is.

Sorry -- I should have mentioned that is 37 miles each way.
