Half the people in prison were drinking when they did whatever they did…When I was young I remember thinking that it was ridiculous to pretend that alcohol was somehow radically different and more benign than the rest of the drugs people take.
I continue to tire of the War on Drugs.

I think I have mentioned before that a day spent in district court (locally, the place they take minor malefactors, also called magistrates or municipal court some places) will reveal that alcohol causes a lot of problems.
The nutty thing about is that the majority of the drunks who show up have done something with a cash value of not much more than $50 -- whether they stole something, vandalized something or whatever.
Some people are just dumb. Smart people get drunk but do not, usually, end up in district court.
